How much blood is in the body?
Approx 6 litres
The Adequate Intake of water for males and females:
M: 3 Litres approx 3 cups
F: 2.2 litres approx 9 cups
or 30mls of water for each kg.
e.g. 60kg x 30ml = 1800ml or 1.8ml
Functions of water
- Solvent for chemical substances
- Vehicle for transportation of blood cells
- Assist the digestive system
- Maintain body temp
- Lubricate joints and various membranes
- Shock absorber for joints
- Maintain blood volume by maintaining sodium and - potassium balance in and out of cells;
Sources of water
Drinking water and all beverages except alcohol and seawater.
Meats: 50-60% water
The body’s metabolic processes create water
By product of various nutrient digestion. approx 0.33L can be used by the body.
Dehydration
Symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting, high fever or burns.
Likely to occur after exercise or hot weather.
Food intake can reduce effect for short period.
Severe dehydration

Mild:
- fatigue, headaches
Excess water consumption
increased urination leads to poor absorption of essential nutrients, kidneys cannot excrete enough fluids.
