1.10 Diverticular Disease Flashcards
Result of:
Long term constipation
When bowel content is firm, it becomes too hard for the muscles to propel it by normal contractions
Prolonged constipation causes the intestine walls to thicken; thus, create increased pressure in the bowel
Pressure causes the walls to rupture – forming a pouch or diverticular
If these pouches become infected it is referred to as diverticulitis
Causes of constipation:
Inadequate fibre levels, lack of physical activity, inadequate fluid (water) intake
Diverticulitis
diagnosed when these pouches become infected
Symptoms:

- Painful bowel movement
How to reverse symtoms:

- increase water intake
Insufficient water intake: body composition
66% of body is made of water
Adult requires 1.5L and 3L per day
Importance of Water
Water helps aid digestion and transfer, dilute and excrete water soluble compounds throughout the body
Water is consumed in many forms
