Q

Hour does Ir spectroscopy work?

A
  • a beam of IR radiation is passed through a sample of a chemical and is absorbed by covalent bonds in the molecule ( increasing vibrational energy )
  • different bonds absorb different amounts of radiation and stretch and vend accordingly

Q

What are the uses of Ir spectroscopy?

A
  • identification of particular bonds in a molecule
  • bonds determined as they have characteristic peaks in identifiable parts of the spectrum
  • identification of compounds by direct comparison of specta- compare spectrum with known sample
  • fingerprint region of the spectrum is unique to each compound so unknowns can be found
