17.2- Infrared Spectroscopy Flashcards
1
Q
Define infrared spectroscopy?
A
The analysis of infrared light interacting with a molecule
2
Q
Hour does Ir spectroscopy work?
A
- a beam of IR radiation is passed through a sample of a chemical and is absorbed by covalent bonds in the molecule ( increasing vibrational energy )
- different bonds absorb different amounts of radiation and stretch and vend accordingly
3
Q
What are the uses of Ir spectroscopy?
A
- identification of particular bonds in a molecule
- bonds determined as they have characteristic peaks in identifiable parts of the spectrum
- identification of compounds by direct comparison of specta- compare spectrum with known sample
- fingerprint region of the spectrum is unique to each compound so unknowns can be found
