1.7 - Hawaii Flashcards
1
Q
How is land zoning used in Hawaii?
A
- residential and commercial areas are kept away from volcanoes
- both dormant and active
- is difficult as many people would like to live there due to fertile soil
- keep people away from river valleys (pyroclastic flows are likely to flow down them)
2
Q
How are lava flows diverted?
A
- lava is solidified in places by spraying water on it
- natural “canal”
3
Q
How is hazard resistant design used?
A
- older buildings are modified
- cross braced
- legislation makes this more common place
- otherwise adoption is lower due to cost
4
Q
How are engineering defences used?
A
- crater lakes are drained to prevent water from accumulating, preventing flooding
- Emergency services are provided with back up energy sources
- sea walls and mangroves may be placed to absorb tsunami energy
5
Q
What role do engineers and planners play?
A
- monitor volcanoes to put plans in action as soon as possible
- monitor:
- gas emissions
- faultline strain
- ground deformation
- clouds (in anticipation of lahars)
