16. How is body temperature maintained? Flashcards
What are the three zones for body temperature and how are they defined?
- Homeothermic zone = physiological boundaries. Stay same temperature by physiological processes (e.g. sweating). Maintaining 37*C
- Thermoneutral zone (TNZ): Metabolic rate does not change (not non-shivering thermogenesis or whatever)
- Comfort zone: feeling nice (mood e.g.)
Homeothermic zone: heat production vs environmental temp. is/is not constant
is not constant
Thermoneutral zone: heat production vs environmental temp is/is not constant
is constant. No consequences for energy requirements.
The lines bordering the UCT’s and LCT’s at different metabolic rates = ?
Lines of passive heat loss. heat gain/loss without sweating or shivering. By radiation, conduction, convection.
What do you reach when lines of passive heat loss are extrapolated?
When the line is extrapolated, you reach skin temperature.
Passive heat loss is influenced by …
by skin temperature (Ts), insulation (I), S (surface)
What is on the Y-axis of a heat diagram?
Heat load/heat loss (maintenance)
