16 forest Flashcards
Biomes
community units showing the spatial distribution of living organisms controlled by climate
Vegetation Formations
Forests in the Tropics
➢ Swamp forest
➢ Rain forest
➢ Monsoon forest
➢ Dry forest
Forests in the Boreal and Temperate Zone
Swamp Forest
poorly drained and undrained sites
saltwater(Rhizophora, Nipa palm, coconuts), freshwater(limiting soil aeration), brackish water
Rain Forest
*discontinuous upper story, few gigantic and isolated trees with large crowns, 40 to 45
meters
*continuous middle story, constituent trees
pressed against each other, 25 to 30 meters
*lowest story comprises small
trees and bushes Rain Forest
*montane rain forests:above 2,000 m, moisture-saturated air and fog-drip the daily source of precipitation, 20 to 25 m
Monsoon Forest
*a very dry period and then very wet monsoon
*In the wetter areas, are tall and annually shed
their leaves; In drier areas, have a period of leaflessness
Dry Forest
*high rates of evapotranspiration and dry conditions,
* Species richness in dry forests is markedly lower
*dominated by deciduous trees
*Leaf abscission to water availability
Boreal forests
*northern hemisphere
*tree species diversity is very poor
*Needle-leaved evergreen conifers
Temperate Forests
➢ Temperate Deciduous Forests(north)
➢ Temperate Coniferous Forests(north, Conifers)
➢ Temperate Mixed Forests(evergreen plus
deciduous)
➢ Temperate Broad-Leaved Evergreen Forests(Mediterranean-type climate)
