What were some causes of the revolution?

A
  • The govts repressive political policies meant prisons were over flowing, city streets full of soldiers and cencorship denied freedom
  • Famine was a constant in the countryside. peasants taxed when not enough food produced.

  • Russia wanted to modernise
  • Invested lots of money into doing so
  • Peasants heavily taxed on grain and everyday items e.g alcohol
  • Wages very low
  • 1902 industrial slump meant thousands of workers lost their jobs and strikes occured.

  • Poor harvests in 1900 and 1902 meant peasants were barely surviving, violence occured and landlords houses were burned
  • Govt used troops to crush disturbances, but peasants fought back as the had had enough

  • 1904 Nicholas II started a war with Japan over Port Arthur
  • Japan were thought to be an inferior opponent and Russia were looking foward to victory
  • But Russia thrashed in war and defeated 1905

How did Bloody Sunday lead to the revolution?

A
  • Soldiers at palace opened fire on protestors and killed around 200 innocent peasants
  • Peasants disatisdied with working conditions and wages
  • Very significant as after, peasants no longer saw the Tsar as their Father
