1.5 Paper and board finishing Flashcards
What are the 7 paper and board finishing processes
Encapsulation, Laminating via surface coating, Embossing and debossing, foil blocking, varnishing, spot varnishing, speciality varnishes
What is the process of encapsulation
A printed product is encapsulated within a film /pouch that has a heat activated adhesive on the inner pouch faces
What is the process of Embossing/debossing
Heated dies “iron” a raised (Embossing) or depressed(Debossing) feature into papers or boards
What are 2adv and 1 disadv of Laminating via surface coating
-One or both faces can be gives some protection from moisture, dirt or fading due to UV
-Low cost films can enhance the aesthetic of a printed product
-However films do need trimming and edges remain unprotected
What is the process of Laminating via surface coating
A thin polymer film is adhered to a printed surface, using a heat activated adhesive, alternatively a liquid polymer layer is applied by roller or spray
What is the process of Foil blocking
Metallic foils, attached to a polyester carrier sheet, are transferred to the print surface by means of a heated die
What are the 3 features of encapsulation
-The polymer film protects all surfaces and edges
-Glossy, durable and wipe clean finish
-However polymer border to printed product
What are the 4 features of Foil blocking
-Metallic printed effect is eye-catching and adds value to printed products
-However heat and pressure need to be carefully set to avoid burnt, distorted or peeling foil
-And limited to coloured foils available
-And significant wastage
What are the 3 features of Embossing/debossing
-Adds appeal to business cards, greeting cards and chocolate packaging
-However dies are expensive
-And there is no added protection to the material
What is the process of varnishing
Print varnishes are clear or tube inks that are printed onto coloured images
What is the process of Spot varnishing
A gloss or matt varnish can be applied to specific areas or spots of a printed product
What are the 2 features of spot varnishing
-Eye-catching and has a textural quality
-However offers limited production
What are the 2 specialty varnishes
Fragrance burst “Scratch and sniff” inks
Sparkle varnish contains metallic polyester flakes
Silver latex “scratch off” inks
What are the 3 features of varnishing
-Quality range of finishes that gives some protection to printed work
-However coloured inks must be thoroughly dried before application of a vanish, which also takes time to dry
-UV varnishes dry once passed under UV lightning systems which saves time but adds to cost
