1.1 workshop tests Flashcards

1
Q

What is the workshop tensile test

A

A material is clamped and a mass is added to the other end of the material. The greater the tensile strength the less t will bend

Q

What is the workshop toughness test

A

A material is clamped into a vice and then hit with a hammer (The more bent the material the lower the toughness)

Q

What is the workshop hardness test

A

A dot punch is placed on a material and then impacted (The larger the indent the less hard the material is)

What is the electrical conductivity workshop test

A

Probes at either end of the material tests the resistance of the material

6
Q

What is the thermal conductivity workshop test

A

The material is heated at one end and then a stopwatch measures how long it takes for the material to heat at the other end

Q

What is the industrial tensile test

A

The material is placed into a tensometer which applies a force stretching the material (The resistance of the force depends on the tensile strength)

Q

What is the industrial toughness test

A

A Charpy impact test uses a swinging pendulum that impacts a material to test for toughness where the lower the pendulum swings after the impact the more force the material absorbed (More tough)

10
Q

What are the 3 industrial hardness tests (Explain)

A

Rockwell - The diamond indentor makes a small and large load and the diffirence between the 2 measures the hardness
Brinell - The steel ball indents and the diameter of the hole measures the hardness
Vickers - The diamond pyramid indents the material and the smaller the indent the harder the material

Q

What is the Xray test

A

An Xray is passed through a material and the image is projected onto a screen to display faults in the material

Q

What is the ultrasonic test

A

A transducer makes sound that pass through the material and bounce back to create a display of the material for faults

Q

What is the thermal conductivity industrial test

A

2 plates are put around the material the heat increases at a steady rate and the heat transfer is measured

Q

What is the electrical conductivity test

A

The material is placed between 2 copper blocks and wires measure the materials current and voltage to then find its resistance

Q

What is the industrial ductility and malleability test

A

The material is placed in a bending machine and bent with crack on the outer side meaning ductility and the inside meaning malleability
