Explain the patterns of settlement
Dispersed, linear, nucleated settlements
Describe and explain the factors which may influence the site and growth and functions of settlements
Physical factors- soil, (to grow crops for food) water supply, (for crops and a drinking supply) relief- (harder to build on slopes could be rockslides good for defences)- forests (to build the houses and for fuel)
Give reasons for the hierarchy of settlements and services
And the top of the triangle is capital cities which only has one in each country, has more high order services and has a large population
Hamlets and villages with is at the bottom of the triangle and has more low order services, and has a low population
Low order services
Services that people use on a regular basis such as hairdressers and a pub
High order services
Usually expensive services that people use occasionally
Like airports, and a furniture shop
Threshold population
The minimum amount of people needed for a service to be worthwhile
Sphere of influence
How far a person is willing to travel for that service, a high order service has a bigger sphere influence than a low order service
What does it mean by hierarchy of settlements
A way of arranging settlements into order based upon their population
