14.2 Preventing Injuries and Accidents Flashcards
OSHA stands for:
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
What does OSHA do? What two standards are there?
They establish and enforce safety standards of the workplace. There is the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard & Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals Standard
What does the Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals Standard do?
Requires that employers inform employees of all chemicals and hazards in the workplace and provide MSDS
What are MSDS?
Material Safety Data Sheets. Provides product identification about chemicals and ppe while handling chemicals, instructions for safe use, procedures for spills and disposal, emergency first-aid in case of injury
What does the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard do?
Protects healthcare workers from diseases caused by exposure to body fluids.
What diseases does the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard specifically protect hcw from?
Hepatitis B, C and AIDS/HIV
What is Ergonomics?
An applied science used to promote the safety and well being of a person by adapting the environment and using techniques to prevent injuries.
Examples of ergonomics?
Correct placement of furniture, avoiding repetitive movement, burned out lightbulbs, frayed cords, wet floors
Examples of things to do/look for with equipment and safety:
Frayed cords, hazard signs, do not mix chemicals unless instructed, read labels at least 3 times, use goggles with liquids, read and follow instructions or manual, report damage to supervisor, and wear closed toed shoes
Examples of patient and resident safety:
Observe patient at all times
Keep good privacy for the patient
Inform patient of all procedures
Walk on right side of hallway in facilities
Examples of personal safety:
Back Brace for heavy objects
Report all types of injuries no matter how small
Correct body mechanics
Keep areas clean and neat
Walk; never run
Wash hands after and before all procedures
