14 Hormonal Communication Flashcards
What do endocrine glands secrete and where are they secreted?
Hormones
Bloodstream
Examples of endocrine glands?
Pancreas
Adrenal
How may a gland be stimulated?
Change in conc of a substance (I.e blood glucose conc)
Or
As a result of another hormone or nervous impulse
What do hormones bind to?
Target cells
2 types of hormones?
Steroid
Non steroid
Describe steroid hormones and give an example
Lipid soluble
Receptors may be present in cytoplasm or nucleus
Acts as a transcription factor which facilitates or inhibits transcription of a gene
Example= oestrogen
Describe non steroid hormones and give an example
Hydrophilic
Bind to receptors on cell surface membrane on target cells
Triggers cascade reaction mediate by second messengers
Example= adrenaline
What are the two parts that make up an adrenal gland? And give examples of hormones produced here
Adrenal cortex (outside, produces hormones vital to life I.e cortisol)
Adrenal medulla (inside, produces non essential hormones I.e adrenaline and noradrenaline)
