What is a Nematode?
A roundworm, lives in soil, pathogen of humans and livestock
What is an Enterobius vermicularis?
A pinworm, highly contagious (esp. children)
Female crawls out of anus at night to release eggs
What are the symptoms of pinworms?
How are they treated?
Asymptomatic or perianal/vaginal itch
(can detect w/sticky tape)
Treatment: Antihelminthic
What are Ascaris lumbricoides?
A large intestinal roundworm (40-50cm long), eggs in faeces/soil
What are the symptoms of Ascaris lumbricoides?
What is the treatment?
Many asymptomatic, pneumonitis, intestinal obstruction
Antihelminthic
What is Strongyloides stercoralis?
A roundworm that infects by skin penetration (shoes prevent)
What are the symptoms of Strongyloides stercoralis?
What is the treatment?
Many asymptomatic, pneumonitis, disseminated/hyperinfection
Antihelminthic
What are Schistosoma mansonii (Bilharzia)?
Flukes (trematodes), parasitic, no body segmentation, lives in intestinal veins
How are people infected with Schistosoma?
What is the treatment?
Freshwater snails, larvae penetrate skin (esp. tropical areas)
Antihelmitntic
What is Echinococcus granulosus?
A tapeworm, zoonotic infection, lays hydatid cysts
What are the symptoms of Echinococcus?
Treatment?
Hydatid cysts, principally in liver/lungs
Treatment: surgery, PAIR, antihelmintics
What are Taenia saginata and Taenia solium?
Tapeworms: Taeniasis, parasites, zoonotic infection, cysticercosis
