13.4 Microbiology: Eukaryotic Parasites 1 Flashcards
Name 3 ectoparasites
Lice (insect)
Mites (arachnids)
Ticks (arachnids)
Name 3 protozoal parasites
Entamoeba
Giardia
Toxoplasma gondii
What it the definition of a parasite?
Obligate host needed (metabolically dependent)
What are 4 different categories of hosts?
Definitive (sexual maturity reached in host)
Intermediate (develops but no maturity)
Paratenic (no development, still infective)
Resevoir (animals–>humans)
What is a lice infection termed?
Pediculosis
What are 3 types of lice?
P. humanis (body louse, lays eggs in clothing)
P. capitis (head louse)
P. pubis (crabs)
What could lice cause?
Rickettsia (trench fever, typhus), spirochetes
What is the size of mites? Where do they live?
Less than 0.5mm size
Likes fingerwebs, elbows (flexor surfaces)
How are mites transmitted? What do we use to treat them?
Person to person contact
Use: Ivermectin, topical scabicides
What kind of hosts are humans for ticks?
Humans rarely natural hosts (ticks are vectors of infectious agents)
What is the name for the paralysis tick?
Ixodes holocyclus
What are protozoa?
Unicellular, mainly non-parasitic
Includes many human pathogens
What is Entamoeba histolytica?
The most common protozoal infection causing dysentry (amoebiasis)
How can we diagnose and treat amoebiasis?
Diagnose: faecal cysts, serology
Treat: Metronidazole + paromomycin, drain (liver) abcesses
What is Toxoplasma gondii?
Obligate intracellular parasite, esp. undercooked meat and cat poop (pregnant women beware)
