What is Management by Objectives (MBO)?
A way of management where objectives are defined within an organisation so that management and workers agree to the objectives and understand what they need to do in order to achieve them.
What are the levels involved in MBO?
It involves breaking down the aims and goals of an organisation into targets and objectives for divisions, departments, managers, and finally workers.
What is the benefit of MBO?
If all levels meet their targets, then the business should perform better.
What is an Autocratic leadership style?
The leader makes all of the decisions and does not require input from the workers, leading to fast decision making.
What is a Democratic leadership style?
This style encourages employee participation in decision-making, where the leader considers workers’ opinions but ultimately makes the decision.
What is a Paternalistic leadership style?
The leader is autocratic but makes decisions in what they believe to be the best interests of the workers.
What is a Bureaucratic leadership style?
Decisions can only be made if rules and procedures are followed, making decision making slow but clear.
What is a Laissez faire leadership style?
The leader allows the workers to make their own decisions and trusts them to work without direction.
What is a contract of employment?
An agreement that sets out an employee’s employment conditions, rights, responsibilities, and duties.
When must a written statement of terms and conditions be given to an employee?
Within 2 months of the employment starting.
What is the minimum wage?
The legal minimum wage rates that must be paid to employees.
What does the Equality Act 2010 protect against?
It protects people from discrimination in the workplace and wider society based on various characteristics.
What is a Trade Union?
An organisation that represents workers in a particular trade, industry, or occupation to protect and improve their terms and conditions of employment.
What is Collective Bargaining?
The official process by which representatives of the workforce negotiate with employers on behalf of their members.
What is Industrial Action?
Occurs when employees are in a dispute with their employer and have failed to reach an agreement, including actions like strikes.
