13.1 Minor Procedures Flashcards
COA minor procedures
Refractive surgeries mean
Correcting refractive error so the lights hit retina (not in front or behind)
In myopic refractive error surgeries on the cornea
Go from steep cornea to flatter
In hyperopic refractive error surgeries on the cornea
Go from flat to steeper (usually periphery of cornea is made flatter so center seems steeper)
Commonly used if corneas are too thin to qualify for LASIK
PRK. B/c there’s no flap, so don’t have to have such a thick cornea
LASIK vs PRK
LASIK flap- instant vision/ low pain. VS. PRK- no flap, healed under BCL, pain/irritation for 4 days, blurred vision for weeks as heal
PTK
Phototheraputic keratectomy- smooths over scars anterior cornea
RK
Radial Keratotomy- 8 slices into cornea (used prior to LASIK for myopia only)
PK vs DMEK
Penetrating graft is full thickness corneal garft(all layers replaced with organ donor cornea). VS. DMEK just descemets back layer of pumps that house the corneal pumps replaced with a graft
Difference between LPI and SLT glaucoma procedure
LPI hole in iris for NARROW angle. VS. SLT is for OPEN angle (cleans out gutter- trabecular meshwork
Vitrectomy
Removal of vitreous (think big floater in way of vision)- usually gets gas bubble after
Photocoagulation retinal laser
Stops bleeding in periphery of retina (leaves the yellow round scars 360)
Anti-vegf
Retinal injections for neovascularization (new but bad vessel growth)
Incision vs excision
Incision is cutting IN tissue (like during PCIOL surgery make a incision in cornea to get into the eye) . VS. Excision cutting something out like a growth
