A

a general stain used to differentiate the nucleus and major cellular compartments
hematoxylin: acidic components blue/purple
nuclei
eosin: basic components pink
cytosol, proteins

What is the trichrome stain? What is it used for?

A

Multiple techniques used, but generally 3 colors
mainly to highlight collagen fibers
increased CT deposition with fibrosis, related conditions

What is prussian blue used for?

A

used to detect intracellular iron deposits, ferritin and hemosiderin
increased in active macrophages, bi-product of RBC breakdown, hemolysis, trauma
