13 - MHC and Transplantation Flashcards
1
Q
Features of the MHC
A
Set of genes found in all vertebrate species.
Function to present ‘self’ and ‘non-self’ antigens
Highly polymorphic
2
Q
Class I MHC encodes what type of antigen?
A
HLA-A, B, C (classical antigens)
3
Q
Class II MHC encodes what type of antigen?
A
HLA-DR, DQ, DP antigens
4
Q
Class III MHC encodes what type of antigen?
A
HSP 70, TNF, C4A, C4B
5
Q
Where are class I antigens found?
A
All nucleated cells
6
Q
Where are class II antigens found?
A
Primarily on B lymphocytes, but, their expression can be induced on T lymphocytes and other cells
7
Q
How many class I and II antigens do people inherit?
A
Two antigens at any given locus.
Codominant expression
