12.5 Hormonal Regulation of Metabolism Flashcards
How does Glucagon increase blood glucose lvls?
By promoting Gluconeogenesis and Glycogenolysis in the liver
Which cells secrete Glucagon?
Pancreatic α-cells
Which cells secrete Insulin?
Pancreatic β-cells
What triggers Glucagon secretion?
Low glucose, high AA lvls
What does cortisol do?
Its a Glucocorticoid
Elevates blood glucose lvls and increases access for nervous system tissue.
Increases activity glucagon, epinephrine, and catecholamines.
What does a Glucocorticoid do?
Increases blood glucose lvls, in stress response, inhibiting glucose reuptake, enhance glucagon and catecholamine impact.
*Long term exposure promotes fat storage in adipose tissue.
What is a Catecholamine?
Secreted from adrenal medulla.
Increase liver and muscle glycogen phosphorylase, promoting glycogenolysis.
What do Thyroid Hormones do?
Modulate the impact of metabolic hormones and directly impact basal metabolic rate.
What is Thyroxine (T4)?
Increases metabolic rate after several hours & lasts several days
Converted to T3 in tissue
What is Triidothyronine (T3)?
Increases metabolic rate rapidly but lasts for short duration.
