12.1 Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics [HY] Flashcards
When are biological systems open?
When matter and energy can be exchanged with the
environment.
When are biological systems closed?
When only energy can be exchanged with the
environment.
How is energy exchanged?
In the form of mechanical work when something is moved or as heat energy.
How is matter exchanged?
Through food consumption, elimination and respiration.
What is Enthalpy?
The overall change in heat of a system during a reaction.
What is Entropy?
The degree of disorder or energy dispersion in system.
When a system is closed what can you assume?
change in enthalpy = change in internal energy = heat exchange within environment
Is work performed on a closed biological system?
No, because pressure and volume stay constant.
