1.22.2024. Lecture 3 Material Flashcards
In-Person Lecture
What is the first step in the scientific method?
The first step to the scientific method is to ask/formulate question
What is the second step in the scientific method?
generate a hypothesis
What is the third step in the scientific method?
gather/generate data
What is the fourth step in the scientific method?
to analyze data and draw conclusions
What is the final step in the scientific method?
communicate the results
What is did Darwin believe in?
Darwin believed that species changed over time and “positive changes are kept and the locking in for the positive changes were the basis for evolution
What did Mendel believe in?
Parents transmit traits to their offspring which is known as inheritance
What were ancient ideas?
ideas people believed in but had no basis for it
What are some example of ancient ideas?1
- children look like their parents
- disorders run in families
- mating with close relatives is not good
At what point did humans know mating with relatives was not good?
At some point 34,000 years ago, humans recognized the dangers of inbreeding and avoided it
What is the background of Mendel?
He was a german national and grew up in a farm and was poor but educationally motivated. Wanted to be an educator but failed exams and later observed peas and how traits are passed down
What are gametes?
sperm and egg
What is the law of segreation?
during gamate formation the alleles for each gene segreagte from eachother so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene
What is the law of independent assortment?
Genes for different traits can segregate independently during the formation of gametes
What is the law of dominance?
some alleles are dominant while other are recessive where if an organism with at least one dominant allele will display the effect of the dominant allele
What is true about chromosomes?
It is the basis of inheritance
