What is osteoporosis?
Metabolic disorder where rate of absorption exceeds the rate of deposition
What age range experiences postmenopausal osteoporosis?
50-60
What age range experiences involutional osteoporosis?
> 70
What are risk factors for primary osteoporosis?
Smoking, inadequate calcium intake, excessive alcohol or salt, small stature, caucasian, inactive, family history
What is secondary osteoporosis?
Caused by prolonged drug therapy of heparin or corticosteroids, endocrine disorders, or malnutrition
What are three ways osteoporosis is diagnosed?
- X-ray
- DXA scan
- FRAX
What is a T-Score with a DXA scan?
Compares results to a healthy young adunt
What is a Z-Score with a DXA scan?
Compares results to a person of same age and gender
What T-Scores can indicate osteopenia?
-1.5 - -2.4
What Z-Score can indicate osteoporosis?
< -2.5
What are the two medical management techniques for osteoporosis?
- Supplements (calcium and vit D)
