Where is Kashmir?
A
- one of the most difficult regions to reach in normal conditions
- mountainous environment (fragile lots of landslides and falling rocks)
- part of disputed India/Pakistan

A
a poor largely agriculture region that is administered by Pakistan

When did the EQ happen?
A
- a Saturday morning (a normal school day - so many of the dead and injured were children)
- during Ramadan (many people were sleeping due to waking early to eat)
- close to winter (conditions were becoming more treacherous)

What immediate aid was given?
A
- considerable relief effort by Pakistani government and relief agencies
- helicopters flew blankets, tents, basic provisions and medical supplies into the area

- helicopter lifts
- US gave $5.4 billion in aid
- Ramadan ‘good intentioners’ bringing supplies by car to camps
- Pakistani Britons send aid
- UN provides 2.4 million blankets

What were the main barriers to help?
A
- unseasonal torrential rain/hail
- harsh Himalayan winter which block access for 6 months
- corruption due to illegal deforestation and poor levels of education
- long term RUM meant area had suffered brain drain and many of the men had gone so was little strength left
- lack of clear maps of the area
- poor building practices due to lack of knowledge and housing being built on undesirable land
