12/3/2024: Wrap Up Flashcards
Basic Principle of Social Psych
Reality is Constructed
Beauty in the eye of the beholder
Perceptions and judgements of self and others influence by perceiver’s own cognitive and motivational processes
Memory is a reconstruction of past
We create our social world where actions influence reality
Accessibility
What is it determined by?
Cog representaitons currently accessible are the most influential in determining perceptions and judgements
Determined by FREQUENCY AND RECENTY of activation, learned associations, and hopes/wishes/desires
Are even psychological constructs assocations?
Yes!
Person + Trait = Impression
Category + Trait = Stereotype
Object + attribute = belief
Object + evaluation = attitude
Situation + behavior = norm
Situation + own behavior = habit
Me + Role = self-concept
Category + member = exempler
In sales, don’t want association to be something people have to think about. Want it to be automatic.
What final point did Fazio make about Salience vs. Accessibility of alternatives?
Critical step in decision making is identifying alternatives.
Easy: Choose favorite, Salient, Attitude-decision correspondence high
But! When alternatives not specified, individual must generate them. What is generated will be function of exemplar accessibility. Strength of category-exemplar association.
To choose most preferred, it must be generated, and instead you generate the most popular
What are the consequences of accessibility functioning the way it does?
Primacy and conservatism: We learn it first, it has advantage
Functional value: Enhances processing efficiency, preserves resources.
Name the two Basic Information Processing Principles
Accessibility and Superficial vs. extensive processing (determined by automaticity, heuristics, and dual process models (dispositional inferences and jdugement/decision-making).
List the 3 basic motivational principles
- Striving for mastery (to organize our world, learn stereotypes/associations, so that we can max reward, decrease punishment)
- Seek connectedness (need to belong, ingroup, consequence of exclusion)
- Value me and mine (positive light, self-serving (defensive) processing, self-perceptions (identities) influence behavior).
