11.9 Bone Growth and Remodeling Flashcards
What is endochondral ossification?
process of bone growth where hyaline cartilage is produced and then replaced by bone
What is intramembranous ossification?
synthesis of bone from an embryonic tissue called mesenchyme resulting in flat bones
What is the epiphyseal plate?
disk of hyaline cartilage that is actively being produced by chondrocytes
What is the epiphyseal line?
fusion point of the diaphysis and epiphysis in adults
What are osteoblasts?
cells that make bone by laying down collagen and hydroxyapatite
What does the space left by osteoblasts become and what do osteoblasts in those spaces become?
lacuna
osteocyte
What are osteoclasts?
cells the continuously destroy bone by dissolving hydroxyapatite crystals
What hormones increase blood calcium levels?
parathyroid hormone
calcitriol
What hormone decreases blood calcium levels?
calcitonin
