11.8 Tissues Found at Joints Flashcards
What is cartilage?
strong but flexible extracellular tissue secreted by chondrocytes
What are the three types of cartilage?
hyaline
elastic
fibrous
What is hyaline cartilage?
strong and somewhat flexible cartilage
What is articular cartilage?
hyaline cartilage that surrounds joints
What is elastic cartilage?
found in structures that require support and more flexibilty than hyaline
What is fibrous cartilage?
very rigid and found in places where very strong support is needed
Where does cartilage receive its nutrients and immune protections from?
surrounding fluid
What are ligaments?
connects bones to other bones
What are tendons?
connect bones to muscle
What is a joint?
point where one bone meets another bone
What are synarthroses?
immovable joints; point where two bones are fused together
What are amphiarthroses?
semi-movable joints that provide mobility and support
What are diarthroses?
freely movable joints
What is synovial fluid?
fluid that lubricates movable joints
What is arthritis?
inflammation of joints
