11.6 Connective Tissue Flashcards
What is connective tissue?
consists of cells and the materials they secrete
What are all connective tissue cells derived from?
fibroblast
What is collagen?
strong, fibrous protein
What is elastin?
extracellular protein that gives tissues the ability to stretch and regain shape
What are the fibroblast derived cells?
adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes
What does the matrix of connective tissue consist of?
collagen, elastin, and ground substance
What is the ground substance of the connective tissue matrix?
thick, viscous material made of proteoglycans
What are proteoglycans?
large macropolymers consisting of a protein core with many attached carbohydrate chains
What gives connective tissue its characteristic thickness and firmness?
hydrophobic carbohydrate chain in ground substance that causes water to surround tissue
What are the two types of connective tissues?
loose connective tissue
dense connective tissue
What is loose connective tissue?
packing tissues that include areolar and adipose tissues
What is dense connective tissue?
tissue that contains large amounts of fibers
What are the dense connective tissues?
tendons
ligaments
cartilage
bone
