11.2 Skeletal Muscle Flashcards
What do skeletal muscle provide?
voluntary movement of the body in response to stimulation by somatic motor neurons
What are tendons?
strong connective tissue formed primarily of collagen that attach skeletal muscles to bones
What is flexing in relation to skeletal muscle?
reducing the angle of the joint
What is extending in relation to skeletal muscle?
increasing the angle of the joint
What is abducting in relation to skeletal muscle?
moving away from the body’s midline
What is adducting in relation to skeletal muscle?
moving towards the body’s midline
What is origin in relation to skeletal muscle?
the point where the muscle attaches on the bone
What is insertion in relation to skeletal muscle?
point where the muscle attaches on the bone more distant from the center of the body
What are antagonistic muscles?
muscles that are responsible for movement in opposite directions
What are synergistic muscles?
muscles that are responsible for movement in the same direction
What is a myofiber?
muscle fibers found in each fascicle
What does it mean for each skeletal muscle cell to be multinucleated synctia?
formed by the fusion of individual cells during development
What is the sarcolemma?
myofiber cell membrane that is made of a plasma membrane and an additional layer of polysaccharide and collagen
What are myofibrils?
specialized organelles in each myofiber that are responsible for the striated appearance and generates the contractile force
What are actin and myosin?
proteins in the myofibril that generate contraction
