What did the Monroe Doctrine state that?
US policy was to avoid involvement in European wars. The American continents were not to be colonised by European powers, and any attempts at said colonisation would be regarded as ‘unfriendly’ acts
What did the Monroe Doctrine indicate?
A disinterest in foreign affairs
What policy did the US take in terms of foreign relations?
Isolationism
What were the reasons for isolationism?
- Europe was thousands of miles away
- The USA felt superior to countries which built empires 3. The USA was populated by many seeking to escape persecution in their old lands so the USA did not want to become involved with these regimes
- The USA was very different from other European states
These inward looking attitudes were good what?
A rural, agricultural nation
Why was the US okay to be independent?
They had sufficient raw materials available, the Pacific and Atlantic proved as natural barriers and no states on the US borders proved as threats to their interests
When was the US prepared to intervene?
When American interests were directly threatened
