What change did industrial development bring to towns and cities?
It caused urbanisation, the amount of towns and cities grew and so did the population of them

It grew from 30,000 to 1 million
What did cities previously serve as?
Commercial centres, with manufacturing occurring outside of their limits
As industry grew, how did cities change?
Cities became manufacturing sectors. They became identified by what they produced
What negatives emerged as a result of urbanisation?
The spread of slums and corrupt systems of running these cities
What did the influx of workers lead to?
Hasty construction of poor quality housing, often overcrowded
How was agriculture affected by the war?
It did not prosper the same way as industry, most farmers lived in debt
Why did farmers face hardships?
They incurred debts due to borrowing for the purchase of land and mechanisation. They also became overly dependant on overseas markets
What did many farmers have to compete with?
Big agribusinesses
What were some farmers too dependant on?
Single crops, for example the South were too dependant on cotton
What happened to farming prices?
They kept dropping in the years after the Civil War
What did the Homestead Act result in?
The opening of huge areas in the West to settlement and farming
