1.1 stroke volume,Heart Rate & Cardiac Output Flashcards
What is stroke volume
Vol of blood pumped out by the heart ventricles in each contraction
What does stroke volume depend upon
Venous return
The elasticity of cardiac fibres
Contractility of cardiac tissue
What is the venous return
Vol of blood returning to the heart via veins
What is the elasticity of cardiac fibres
Concerned with the degree of stretch of cardiac tissue during diastole phase of the cardiac cycle
What is starlings law
Increase venous return means greater diastolic filling of the heart thus makes the cardiac muscle stretch so more force of contraction means an increased ejection fraction
What happens the greater the contractility of cardiac tissue
The greater is it the greater the force of contraction and results in a increase in stroke volume
What is teh average heart rate
72 beats per minute
What is cardiac output
The volume of blood pumped out by the heart ventricles per minute
How do you work out cardiac output
Stroke volume x heart rate
What is cardiac hypertrophy
When cardiac musclulat wall thickens so it becomes bigger and stronger from regular aerobic training
What is Bradycardia
When cardiac hypertrophy occurs the ventricle can contract with more force and push out more blood
The heart doesn’t have to beat as often so resting heart rate will decrease
