10 Reasons to call a Mayday? 11/10

A
  1. If you feel you are in a compromised position
  2. If you find a downed firefighter or a member of your crew goes down.
  3. If you or your crew are caught in a flashover, backdraft or explosion.
  4. You become tangled or pinned and self-rescue has not worked in 60 sec.
  5. I you or a member of your crew has fallen through a floor or roof
  6. Your primary exit is blocked and you are unable to reach secondary exit in 60 sec.
  7. You or a member of your crews, low air alarm activation and you are unable to reach an exit or window in 30 sec.
  8. You have become lost or separated from your crew and you are unable to find an exit.
  9. Disoriented and unable to find exit in 60 sec.
  10. Entrapment with low air alarm activating

How to declare a MAYDAY? 11/10

  1. MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY 2. Await confirmation over the radio 3.Repeat if fire command does not respond to initial MAYDAY 4. Upon confirmation by fire command - LUNAR 5. State: Location, Unit, Name, Assignment, Resources needed 6. Activate PASS alarm to help in location 7. Stay calm and conserve air 8. Attempt self rescue but be cognizant of SCBA air level 9. Maintain Communication with Emergency safety officer (ESO) and Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC).

What steps have to be followed when reaching a downed Fire fighter? What a Acronym is used? 11/16

A

P.A.C.C.A.N.

P - Pass alarm - Shut off alarm (look for flashing light)

A - Air - Assessn for breathing (look, listen, feel, for breathing) Check for “blow by” if no blow by turn on bypass valve to check air flow, check SCBA AIr level on the bottle.

C - Communicate - Inform command: a downed or disoriented FF found. If necessary - call a MAYDAY (unable to exit within the 60 sec timeframe).

C - Conditions - Where are you located? What conditions are yopu dealing with (injuries, collapse, multiple victims, etc.)?

A - Actions - What is your plan of action (packaging for extrication, removal, SCBA change over, and / or where you plan to extricate victim to, etc.)

N - Needs - Additional RIC, additional or specific tools, hose lines, etc.
