perception
process of organizing and interpreting sensory information
bottom up processing
starts at the sensory receptors and works up to higher levels of processing.
top down processing
constructs perceptions from the sensory input by drawing on our experience and expectations
schemas
a concept or framework that organizes/interprets info
perceptual set
mental tendencies and assumptions/expectations that greatly affect (top down) what we perceive.
sensation
process where sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimuli from the environment
selective attention
focusing conscious awareness on a particular stimulus.
we receive a lot of sensory input, but only perceive the small amount we pay attention to.
cocktail party effect
shows how in a noisy room, you can still pick out the conversation of interest
inattentional blindness
failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere
change blindness
failing to notice changes in the environment
