10.4 Endocrine Role of the Kidney Flashcards
What hormone is made by the kidney?
erythropoietin (EPO)
What makes aldosterone?
adrenal cortex
What is the basic role of aldosterone on the kidney?
causes sodium reabsorption and potassium secretion resulting in increased serum sodium, increased blood volume, and increased blood pressure
What makes ADH?
posterior pituitary
What is the basic role of ADH in the kidney?
causes water reabsorption by causing epithelial cells of the distal nephron to become permeable to water
When is ADH secreted?
plasma volume is too low
blood pressure is too low
plasma osmolarity is too high
What makes calcitonin?
C cells
When is calcitonin secreted?
when serum calcium is too high
What is the basic role of calcitonin in the kidney?
causes calcium to be removed from the blood by deposition in bone, reduced reabsorption in the gut, and excretion in urine
What makes parathyroid hormone?
parathyroid gland
What is the basic role of parathyroid hormone in kidney?
opposite of calcitonin; causes addition of calcium into blood
What is the basic role of erythropoietin in the kidney?
causes increased synthesis of red blood cells in bone marrow when blood oxygen content falls
