10.2 Anatomy and Function of Urinary System Flashcards
What is the purpose of each kidney?
removes unwanted materials from the blood and passes them to the bladder for storage and secretion
Where does the blood enter the kidneys through?
renal artery
What is the renal artery?
direct branch of the lower portion of the aorta
How is purified blood returned to the circulatory system?
renal vein
What is the renal vein?
empties into the vena cava
How does urine leave the kidneys?
via the ureters
Where do the ureters empty into?
bladder
What is the urinary bladder?
muscular organ that stretches as it fills with urine
What are the two sphincters of the urinary bladder and what are each made of?
internal sphincter = smooth muscle
external sphincter = skeletal muscle
What is the cortex of the kidney?
outer region
What is the medulla of the kidney?
inner region
What are the medullary pyramids?
pyramid shaped stations within the medulla that contain many collecting ducts
What are the collecting ducts of the kidney?
urine empties into these and leaves the medulla at he tip of the pyramid
What is the papilla of the kidney?
tip of the medullary kidney
What is the calyx of the kidney?
each papilla empties into this space; will converge to form the renal pelvis
