101. CXR collpase and consolidation Flashcards
What is the medical terminology used to describe when something looks abnormal
Opacification
What indicates a lobar collapse?
A triangle of increased density (apart form LUL)
If you cant see the left cardiac border, where is the pathology?
Left upper lobe
If you cant see the right cardiac border where is the pathology?
Middle lobe
What are the cardiogenic causes of pulmonary oedmea?
LHF, myocarditis, valve failure, cardiomyopathy
What are the non cardiogenic causes of pulmonary oedema
fluid overload
drug induced causes
ARDS
What are some CXR findings indicative of pulmonary oedema
cardiomegaly
upper zone pulmonary venous diversion
interstitial fluid accumulation (kerley b lines)
Alveolar oedema (batwing opacification)
Pleaural effusions
Explain upper zone pulmonary venous diversion
Caused due to an enlarged left atrium
Upper vessels as prominent as lower zones (big vessels up and down)
Explain Kerley B lines
Horizontal lines that indicate interstitial fluid at the edge and base of the lung
Describe the appearance of alveolar oedema?
Almost like cotton wool balls they show bilateral patchy oedema
Describe the appearance of pleural effusions on the lung?
Show an opacificaiton over the diaphragm
May be subtle and may just occur at the costophrenic angle
