- nobles fiercebly resisted peasant demands for higher wages, causing peasant revolts in england, france, italy and belgium
- jews were blamed for bringing plauge (driven from homes and massacred)
- church suffered a loss of prestige when prayers failed to stop, priests abandonded duties
