10 - detection of muscle injury Flashcards
1
Q
(CK)
- ^ALT greater than ^AST, no ^ CK = ?
- ^AST greater than ^ALT, ^CK = ?
A
- liver injury
- muscle injury
2
Q
(CK)
- muscle specific?
- ^ caused by what?
- does magnitude of ^ correlate to severity?
- how long does CK persist?
A
- yes (also in brain/nerves but not important)
not observed in CNS injury
- skeletal/cardiac musc injury, muscle catabolism (esp cats)
- NO!
- rapidly increases after injury - back to normal within 24 to 48 hours
3
Q
(AST)
- present in what?
- rise/fall when relative to musc injury (and CK)?
A
- cytoplasm of hepatocytes, skeletal/cardiac muscle
- ^ more slowly than CK, persists longer (useful to determine duration w/ CK)
4
Q
(ALT)
- some elevation may be seen in dogs and cats with musc injury but no hepatic dmg
A
5
Q
(lactate dehydrogenase - LDH)
- why non-specific for muscle?
A
- located in cytoplasm in most cells
6
Q
(myoglobin)
- release from dead muscle cells into blood and excreted into urine (dark brown urine)
- if urine + for hemoglobin on dipstick and serum is colorless/yellow -> ?
if serum red -> ?
why?
A
- myglobinuria
- hemoglobinuria
myoglobin rapidly excreted by kidneys -> serum remains colorless
