09 - evaluation of serum and plasma proteins Flashcards
1
Q
- difference btwn plasma and serum?
A
- plasma contains all the stuff (Abs, clotting factors, etc)
serum only contains albumin and remaining globulins
2
Q
- how measure total protein?
- which is better and why?
A
- refractometer or spectrophometric
spectro (refract can be interefered with by lipid and other stuff)
3
Q
- how is albumin measured?
- globulins?
what fractions?
A
- spectro
- on chem profile, subtract albumin from TP - or serum protein electrophoresis
alpha (Antithrombin 3), beta (fibrinogen), gamma fraction (immunoglobulins)
4
Q
(estimation of immunoglobulins)
- done why?
A
- check for FPT - looks like it’s mosly done in LA by refractometry - but other methods are available
5
Q
- how is fibrinogen usually measured?
A
- by heat precipitation
6
Q
(decreased protein concentrations)
- 5 causes of panhypoproteinemia?
A
- blood loss, PLE, severe exudative skin dz, severe burns, effusive disease
7
Q
(decreased protein)
- 6 causes of hypoalbuminemia w/ normal or ^ globulins
A
- starvation, liver dz, GI parasites, intestinal malabsorption, EPI, glomerular dz
8
Q
(decrased protein)
- 2 causes of hypoglobulinemia w/ normal or ^ albumin?
A
- FPT, immune def
9
Q
(increased protein conc)
- ^ albumin only occurs when?
- ^ of albumin and globulin occurs when?
- alpha and beta globulins ^ when?
A
- dehydration
- dehydration
- acute inflammation
10
Q
(increased gamma globulins - aka gammopathies)
- causes of polyclonal?
- monoclonal?
A
- chronic antigenic stimulation, immune mediated dz, liver dz, lymphoma
- cancers (and other conditions… but don’t memo them)
chronic pyderma, plasmacytic enterocolitis, canine ehrichiosis, visceral leishmaniasis (dog), lymphoplasmacytic stomatits (cats), idiopathic monoclonal gammopathy
11
Q
causes of ^ fibrinogen?
A
dehydration, inflammation, renal dz, disseminated neoplasia
