what is classification?
the organisation of living organisms into groups
define species
a group of similar organisms with similar features that reproduce to produce fertile offspring
how would you write ‘HOMO SAPIEN’?
Homo sapien (italics or underlined)
what does courtship behaviour allow animals to do? (5 things)
- identify members of same species
- identify mate that is capable of breeding
- form a pair bond
- synchronise mating
- become able to breed
what does a pair bond lead to?
successful mating
why is it important for animals to synchronise mating?
females of a lot of species can only conceive during a short time, when they produce eggs
what happens during courtship?
a chain of actions (same species have the same actions)
what is the phylogenetic classification system based on?
ancestors, shared characteristics
why is the phylogenetic classification system set out like a hierarchy?
so there is no overlap between different species
what is species richness?
the number of different species in a community
what is biodiversity index?
the number of different species in a community
and the number of individuals of each of the species
what is genetic diversity?
Difference in DNA / base sequence / alleles / genes
how do you calculate biodiversity index?
d= N(N-1) / the sum of n(n-1)
