Q

Autonomic Nervous System

Visceral Motor v. Visceral Sensory

A

Visceral Nervous System

Involuntary, Unconscious part of nervous system

Visceral Motor (parasympathetic / sympathetic Efferents) - innervate smooth and cardiac muscle, blood vessel, glands, and internal organs; unconscious

Visceral Sensory (Afferents) - imprecise localixation of sensation

Q

Divergence

A

One pre-ganglionic neuron can innervate many post-ganglionic neurons

Ex. Many sweat glands are actiavted at once

Ganglia Location?

Parasympathetics

Exit?

Ganglia Location?

A

Sympathetics

Exit - Thoraco Lumbar Levels (to head T1 - T2)

Ganglia - Near CNS

Parasympathetics

Exit - Craniosacral Levels

Q

What two pathways do sympathetics get to the skin?

A
  1. In Thorax, exit and can synapse in the ganglion at that level
  2. In Thorax, com out and ascene or descen chain of ganglia

Horner’s Syndrome

Damage to what pathway?

Symptoms?

A

Damage: Sympathetic Pathway

Symptoms:

  1. Miosis (constricted pupil) - Dilator Pupil M. - Radial smooth muscle
  2. Ptosis (drooping eyelid) - Levator Palpebrae Superioris
  3. Anhydrosis (lack of sweating)

Q

Oculomotor Nerve Palsy vs Horner’s Syndrom

A

Oculomotor:

  • Dilated pupil (Mydriasis), denervate constrictor
  • Eye movements lost (some)
  • Accomodation lost

Horner’s (Sympathetics)

  • Constricted pupil (Miosis), denervate Pupillary dilator
  • Anhydrosis (no sweat)
    • -

BOTH Eyelid droop
