1 - Zill - Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Autonomic Nervous System
Visceral Motor v. Visceral Sensory
Visceral Nervous System
Involuntary, Unconscious part of nervous system
Visceral Motor (parasympathetic / sympathetic Efferents) - innervate smooth and cardiac muscle, blood vessel, glands, and internal organs; unconscious
Visceral Sensory (Afferents) - imprecise localixation of sensation
Ganglia Orientation - Sympathetic vs Parasympathetics
Sympathetic - Short Pre, Long Post
Parasympathetic - Long pre, Short Post
Divergence
One pre-ganglionic neuron can innervate many post-ganglionic neurons
Ex. Many sweat glands are actiavted at once
Sympathetics
Exit?
Ganglia Location?
Parasympathetics
Exit?
Ganglia Location?
Sympathetics
Exit - Thoraco Lumbar Levels (to head T1 - T2)
Ganglia - Near CNS
Parasympathetics
Exit - Craniosacral Levels
Ganglia - Near targets

Sympathetic Innervation Targets?
What important gland are only innervated by sympathetics?
- Skin
- Peripheral Blood Vessels
- - -
Sweat glands
Parasympathetic Innervation
NOT Body wall, mainly organs
What is main organ control of Sympathetic Function?
Hypothalmus
What two pathways do sympathetics get to the skin?
- In Thorax, exit and can synapse in the ganglion at that level
- In Thorax, com out and ascene or descen chain of ganglia
Sympathetic Path to Head
Preganglionic - T1, T2 - Leaves and Ascends chain
Postganglionic - In Superior Cervical Ganglia
- - -
To Target Organ: Joins Plexus on Internal and External Carotid Arties in Unnamed branches
Horner’s Syndrome
Damage to what pathway?
Symptoms?
Damage: Sympathetic Pathway
Symptoms:
- Miosis (constricted pupil) - Dilator Pupil M. - Radial smooth muscle
- Ptosis (drooping eyelid) - Levator Palpebrae Superioris
- Anhydrosis (lack of sweating)
Oculomotor Nerve Palsy vs Horner’s Syndrom
Oculomotor:
- Dilated pupil (Mydriasis), denervate constrictor
- Eye movements lost (some)
- Accomodation lost
Horner’s (Sympathetics)
- Constricted pupil (Miosis), denervate Pupillary dilator
- Anhydrosis (no sweat)
