Motivation
Involving the conditions responsible for variations in intensity/effort, quality (not mentioned a lot), persistence and direction of ongoing behaviour e.g. studying
History
Instincts - innate tendencies which direct behaviour
Developed from Freud’s psychodynamic theories of personality
Later developed into motivation
Criticisms of instincts
Circular - - work because of instinct, instinct was discovered because people work
Ignores interaction with the environment
Motivation and productivity & performance (no pressure)
Multiplication formula, performance:(motivation * ability) - situational constraints
Don’t need to study but good to understand
If motivation is 0, ability is irrelevant
Work-life balance
Workaholics
Work and life factors compete with each other for seniority
Prioritizing
Motivation & Personality
Good predictor of work performance
Most motivated - conscientious & emotionally stable
High neuroticism - negative relationship to motivation
High conscientiousness - positive relationship to motivation
Higher Locus of Control (belief you can control your fate) leads to better outcomes and higher motivation
- Attributing behaviour to internal causes?
Optimism increases motivation
- Seems to diminish after a long time with in an organization
