(1) Infectious Disease Flashcards
Successful invasion of the body by a pathogenic microorganism
Invasion
The stage in the infectious disease process where the short stage of generalized, mild symptoms that precedes illness
Prodromal period
A native disease that prevails continuously in a geographic region
Endemic disease
An infection not present upon admission to a hospital but incurred while being treated at the hospital
Nosocomial infection
The stage in the infectious disease process where the most severe stage, in which signs and symptoms are most evident
Illness
Bacteria that are present for several days, weeks or months and then disappear
Transient microbia
The presence of microorganisms in or on the body or other site (i.e. surface of inanimate objects)
Contamination
Any adverse internal condition severe enough to interfere with normal body functions, caused by a microorganism
Infectious disease
The stage in the infectious disease process where the period in which the body gradually returns to normal as the patient’s immune response and any medical treatment vanquish the pathogens
Decline
A microorganism’s ability to cause infectious disease
Pathogenicity
The stage of the infectious disease process between infection and occurrence of the first symptoms or signs of disease
Incubation period
The stage in the infectious disease process, final stage during which the patient recovers from the illness and tissues and systems are repaired and return to normal
Convalescence
A disease afflicting an increased proportion of the population over a wide geographic area (often worldwide)
Pandemic
A measure of degree or severity of the disease
Virulence
A sudden and simultaneous outbreak or increase in the number of cases of disease in a community
Epidemic
