What are the 2 civil courts of first instance?
The County Court and The High Court.
What cases does the County Court deal with?
Civil cases up to £100,000 in value, contract, tort, trusts, inheritance up to £30,000 and bankruptcy.
What are the 3 divisions in the High Court?
The Kings Bench Division (KBD).
The Chancery Division.
The Family Division.
What cases does the KBD deal with?
Contract and tort matters over £100,000 in value and complex multi-track cases transferred from the County Court.
What cases does the Chancery Division deal with?
Business, property and land related disputes, competition law, intellectual property claims, insolvency disputes and will/probate claims.
What cases does the Family Division deal with?
Child welfare concerns, forced marriage, female genital mutilation and family matters- Matrimonial cases. E.G- divorce.
