1 :Basic organization, body cavities and relative positions Flashcards
Appendicular skeleton
Upper and lower extremities, pelvis
Axial skeleton
Head, thorax, vertebral column
Body cavities
Dorsal cavity and ventral cavity
Dorsal cavity
Cranial cavity and vertebral canal
Thoracic cavity
Pleural cavity,pericardial cavity and mediastinum
Abdominopelvic cavity
Abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
What does the thoracic cavity, the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity have in common?
They all contain the organs = viscera
What is the anatomical position?
Standing upright, looking forward, feet approximately shoulder width apart, palms of the hands facing forward
What are the planes of the body ?
Mid-sagittal (median) plane, Frontal plane, transverse plane
What is the median plane ?
Divides the body into right and left halves
What is the parasagittal plane
Plane parallel to the mid-sagittal plane but not equally divided
What is the frontal plane?
Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions
What is the transverse plane
Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts
What are the relatives position
Anterior, posterior, superior, inferior, proximal and distal
What is the anterior position
In front of the body part
What is posterior
The back of the body part
What is superior
Above or higher than another body part
What is inferior
Below or lower than another body part
What is proximal
Nearest to the source of the attachment or center of the body (extremities)
What is distal
Furthest away from the source of attachement of the center of the body (extremities)
Which positions are specific to the extremities
The proximal and distal one
What is cranial
Nearest or towards the head
What is caudal
Away from the head ( toward the tail end)
What is medial
Towards the mid-sagittal plane
What is lateral
Away from the mid-sagittal plane
What is superficial
Position relative to the body surface (towards the surface)
What is deep
Position relative to the body surface (away from the surface)
What is intermediate
Between two structures
What is external
In relevance to the body wall, cavities or hollow organs
What is internal
In relevance to the body wall, cavities or hollow organs
