[09] ATP Synthesis Flashcards
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate, the main energy carrier in cells
Where is ATP synthesized in cells?
Mitochondria
What is the significance of ATP in cells?
Serves as the main energy currency
How does ATP provide energy to cells?
Energy is released when one of the high-energy phosphate bonds is broken to form ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate)
Define the term “Oxidative Phosphorylation”
It is a metabolic pathway that uses energy released by the oxidation of nutrients to produce ATP
What is the role of mitochondria in ATP synthesis?
They host oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport chain, the processes that generate ATP
What is ADP?
Adenosine Diphosphate, it gets converted into ATP with the addition of a phosphate group
How does ATP synthesis relate to Oxidative Phosphorylation and the Electron Transport Chain?
ATP synthesis is the final step of Oxidative Phosphorylation, which occurs in the Electron Transport Chain
What is the initial source of energy that results in ATP synthesis?
Glucose, Fatty acids, or Amino acids, which are broken down to release energy
How many molecules of ATP can one molecule of glucose produce?
Up to 38 molecules of ATP
