Zygomycoses Flashcards
Other name for zygomycoses
mucormycoses
Any disease cuased by the Zygomycetes aka Mucorales order.
Rhizopus Rhizomucor Mucor Entomophthorales. Absidia
Morphology
Hyaline molds. Wide hyphae more than 10 uM in width.
Grow rapidly, and with a 90 degree, right angle branching and few or no septa.
The root-like structures called rhizoids help define the specific genus
Habitat
Ubiquitious molds found in soil, environment, bread.
Disease
Zygomycosis, mucormycosis.
Fast growing severe disease caused in immunocompromised.
Especially in diabetics in the midst of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Transmitted by inhalation, probably nosocomial as well.
Lung disease that rapidly spread to the nasal cavity and face, then up through the cribriform plate into the brain.
It is angioinvasive and tissue/bone invasive. Causes rapid tissue destruction and necrosis. Very poor prognosis once it is detected in the nasal cavity like 90% fatal.
Huge necrotic face/brain lesions.
Mucormycosis treatment
Surgical debridement of necrotic tissue
Strong Amphotericin B.
