A
schistosomiasis, blood fluke infection
S. mansoni and japonicum: colonize portal and GI vessels, form cysts in the tissue and vessels of the region.
- portal hypertension, ascites
- abdominal pain
- bloody diahrrea
- narrowing of the colon and rectum
- chronic phase, cirrhosis, liver failure, jaundice
S. hematobium, colonize ureter and bladder vessels
- bloody urine, hematuria
- chronic phase, obstruction of ureters/urethra
- oliguria/anuria
- hydronephrosis
- renal failure
- bladder cancer

Morphology of the schistosoma species
A
the adults are sexually dimorphic, unique among the flukes.
Males small and flat
Females large and round with a long body groove
Eggs in stool are diagnostic for species
S. Mansoni: large lateral spine
S. Japonicum: no spine, smooth eggs
S. Hematobium: large terminal spine
