zoology lect 1 Flashcards
Name Darwins theory of evolution.
1) Perpetual change 2) common descent 3) multiplication of species 4) gradualism 5) natural selection
Define perpetual change
characteristics of organism undergo modification across generations time
Define common descent
all forms of life propagated from a common ancestor through a branching of lineages
Define multiplication of species
evolution produces new species by splitting and transforming older ones
Fully formed species propagate as separate evolutionary lineage.
Define Gradualism
Large differences in traits characterizing different species originate by accumulation of small incremental changes over very long periods of time.
Small rather than large changes (usually harmful)
Natural selection
Organism are structured to meet the demand of their environment (adaptation)
populations accumulate favourable characteristics throughout time. (advantageous trait is pass on)
