He wanted to find out if prison guards behave brutally because they have sadistic personalities or is it the situations that creates such behaviour.

There were many ethical issues such as deception, protection from harm and didnt allow pps to withdraw.
They were lied to , abused humiliated and torturted and didn’t allow people to leave despite their bad condition
